Binahon Agroforestry Farm: An Upland Farming Success!

June 29, 2016 by Cristelle Torres No Comments
Binahon Agroforestry Farm

And our 2nd to the last stop for our Organic Agriculture Farm tour in Northern Mindanao was Binahon Agroforestry Farm.

Binahon Agroforestry FarmOur journey to Binahon Agroforestry Farm started here. This is not the farm proper yet. Well, since the little truck service is full already with other bloggers and our luggages, me and Rey decided to walk 600 meters uphill to reach Binahon Agroforestry Farm’s main property.

Binahon Agroforestry Farm

It wasn’t that bad actually. Glad that I experienced something like this and I really enjoyed walking, eventhough it was really muddy that time due to intermittent rainshowers. But looking on the brighter side, it was a good exercise though hahaha! Plus, we were able to meet with some locals while on our way there.

Binahon Agroforestry Farm

And so we reached our destination. The Binahon Agroforestry Farm or BAFF which is located at the foot of Mt. Dulang-dulang in Sitio Bol-ogan, brgy. Songco, Lantapan,Bukidnon.  This 8-hectare farm is owned by husband and wife tandem, Mr. Henry Binahon and Mrs. Perla Binahon(BAFF Manager).

Just my observation. All of the organic farms that I have visited, each were managed and built by husband and wife. It’s just so inspiring knowing these kind of success stories. With all the hardwork, passion and love… They have created something that can somehow leave a legacy on their decendants.

Binahon Agroforestry Farm

Going back, the Binahon Agroforestry Farm (BAFF) is an upland farm which practices sustainable ecological agriculture. where visitors, practitioners and even students can learn and experience the application of different farming systems and conservation as well.

Binahon Agroforestry Farm

Binahon Agroforestry Farm offers accommodation for those visitors who are planning to stay overnight or more for farm tour, seminars or trainings. This was our room. There’s also a room on the 2nd floor but no bed frames. Just mattresses on the floor. Each bed has one pillow, one blanket and a towel. I believe there are 4 rooms in Binahon Farm. They also have clean restfooms for female and male. Again just like in Alomah’s Place, the water there is freezing cold. You can request for hot water, but you have to advise it to the personnel ahead of time so they can prepare it for you just in time for you to use.

Binahon Agroforestry Farm

There’s also a fireplace that would keep you warm in a cold place like this(just a warning. If you don’t want to smell like smoke, then don’t stay in the fireplace area when lighted. :). Look at that cat comfortably sitting in front of the fireplace. So cute!

Binahon Agroforestry Farm

Before the farm presentation, we were served with warm and delicious carrot cinnamon cake and carrot-calamansi juice for refreshment. And after about an hour or two, we were served with a very sumptous organic dinner prepapred by Ms. Perla Binahon.

By the way, BAFF offers catering services for all occasions such as:

  • Weddings
  • Birthdays
  • Anniversaries
  • Seminars
  • Meetings

Binahon Agroforestry Farm

The next day, Mr. Henry Binahon toured us around the farm. Thank God it did not rain during the tour. It was really exciting, since it was our first time to tour around a farm this big.

Binahon Agroforestry Farm

Binahon Agroforestry Farm

I love how the Binahon farm recycle and implement zero-waste management. Instead of throwing away items that may be junk for others, but the farm still find ways to re-use things by converting them as plant pots, chairs, tables and many more.

Binahon Agroforestry Farm

The farm maintains the harmonious balance among nature, agriculture and production, because all of these elements are interconnected in many ways and has specific roles which are beneficial to one another. The farm practices these approaches and techniques: (Source:http://binahonagroforestryfarm.blogspot.com)

1. Soil and Water Conservation (SWC)
– contour farming and natural vegetative strips (NVS)

2. Ensuring Food Security and Enhancing Food Chain
– multi-story and intercropping
– integrated pest management
3. Organic Farming
– vermi culture and composting
– biopesticides

Binahon Farm grows different crops, fruit and non-fruit bearing trees. and it all starts here in the farm’s nursery. They also have two other properties which houses seedlings and where clients can buy as well.

BAFF Organic Fertilizer

Organic fertilizer is also available. And since BAFF is a learning site, students, OJTs can also learn and experiment in creating a good concoction for organic fertilizers.

Binahon Agroforestry Farm specializes in carrot production and they actually process it into value-adding product development which generates additional income for the farm.

Thank you so much Mr. Henry and Perla of Binahon Agroforestry Farm for accommodating us. It was truly a wonderful experience for me. I would definitely go back again if there’s a chance. This farm is really an inspiration, knowing how the farm started and how the Binahons’ kept their feet on the ground and remained simple inspite of their success.

Jaya Secret Garden: A Diversified Organic Backyard Farm

June 21, 2016 by Cristelle Torres No Comments
Jaya Secret Garden: A Diversified Organic Backyard Farm

And our 3rd stop for our Organic Agriculture tour: Jaya Secret Garden. This is another inspiration for those who are planning to create or put up a backyard farm. Imagine, their mini farm is just located at the back of their house growing different kind of crops. Amazing!

Jaya Secret Garden top view

Do not underestimate this small and humble farm because Jaya Secret Garden may be small, but you will learn a lot from it especially from the owners, Junah Bayag and Hazel Bayag, and their very witty daughter, Jayashree Harsha A. Bayag, to whom the farm was named after.(Photo of the Bayag family below)

Jaya's Secret Garden

And just to mention this, Jaya Bayag, even at a young age is very hands on with the farm. She even invited to several Agricultural conferences and conventions to speak and share her knowledge and experiences about their farm and their advocacy.

It’s just amazing how this family managed to grow Jaya Secret Garden which started from passion and advocacy, and eventually turned into-income generating organic farm.

Jaya Secret Garden Lunch (5)

So we arrived at Jaya Secret Garden around past luchtime. And we were welcomed with this lunch feast. Burp… Solved! Happy and healthy tummy. That’s what I like about organic farm tours. We get to eat “organic” meals freshly picked and catched from the farm.

Jaya Secret Garden Blue Ternate

Maybe you are curious on why the rice is color blue. Well, it’s because of this flower, the Blue Ternate. So if you are looking for a blue natural food coloring, you’ve got to look for this flower or better yet plant it in your backyard. 🙂

After our sumptuous lunch, Jaya, with the assistance of her dad toured us around their farm.

This farm may be small compared to the other farms I previously visited, but It’s pretty cool that they got to grow different crops and raise some organic livestocks, fishes, etc. which they actually serve to their guests/visitors or sell it. Plus, I really love the owners’ improvisation on the landscaping of the farm by using recycable materials such as bottles, used tires, etc. The farm lot was really maximized.

 Chocolate Chili Pepper

Chocolate Chili Pepper

Carolina Reaper Chili Pepper

Carolina Reaper Chili Pepper

Aside from the high-value crops, the farm also grows herbs and spices. and Mr. Juna showed us 2 of 5 variety of their chili peper plant. One is the Chocolate Chili Pepper, and the othe one was Carolina Reaper Chili Pepper which is the hottest Chili variety in the world. Be careful with the last one because it is not just an ordinary chili, it will give you a very terrible burning sensation if not handled properly. Even just touching the inner part.

Jaya Secret Garden Organic Farm Tour (11)

Jaya Secret Garden practices INTEGRATED DIVERSIFIED ORGANIC FARMING SYSTEM which is one of the solutions in preventing global warming and promotes sustainability for the community and the whole ecosystem. Zero-waste management is also being implemented in the farm.

Jaya Secret Garden Organic compost

In relevance to that, they also create their own organic compost to nourish their crops and does not use chemical fertilizer which is harmful not only to humans but also to the environment.

Jaya Secret Garden Malaybalay Bukidnon

I really did learn a lot from our Organic farm tour in Jaya Secret Garden. Thank you so much for accommodating us. By the way, entrance fee is ONLY P40 pesos. That’s really affordable considering the experience and knowledge that you will be acquiring. 🙂

Visit and learn at Jaya Secret Garden which is located at Comisio St., Brgy. 1, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon Philippines. For tour schedule and updates you may contact Hazel Fe A. Bayag(Garden Business Manager) at:

Alomah’s Place: A Serene Place In Northern Mindanao

June 1, 2016 by Cristelle Torres 3 Comments
horseback riding in Mindanao
Alomah’s Place in Dahilayan, Manolo Fortich. How do I begin describing this place?. It was really a one of a kind experience for me together with my fellow bloggers during our stay to our 2nd stop of our Organic Agriculture Farm Tour in Northern Mindanao.
 Benjohn and Grace Mahistrado
Alomah’s Place is a 2-hectare land owned and founded by husband and wife, Mr. Benjohn and Ms. Grace Mahistrado. The place was named after the maiden name of Ms. Grace “Alombro” and her husband’s surname “Mahistrado”. When you visit the place, you have to know the story how this whole farm started. You will be inspired how hardwork+passion +love built this beautiful place. Their success story made me realize so many things in life.
Alomah's Place
Going back, it was  raining hard when we arrived at the place. We headed straight to the Tent Floor, a 2-storey cottage where we rested for a while and waited for our dinner. In there, you would feel a very light and nature ambiance. Everywhere you look, you can see woods, cowboy paraphernalia, trophies which the owners got when they joined several cowboy competitions.
Alomah's Place
There’s also a videoke machine to add more entertainment for groups who are using the Tent Floor cottage. To bad we weren’t able to use that since we all just chat all night ahhaha!.
Alomah's Place
Alomah’s Place provided us a self-service welcome drink and salad. Alomah has their very own Salad dressing which  actually taste good by the way. They sell it for only (P75.00). The Alomah’s 3 in 1 Freshherb tea on the other hand, consist of fresh  Taragon, stevia and mint leaves submerged in a mug of hot water .
Alomah's Place
Alomah's Place
Alomah's Place

After our dinner, we already went upstairs to settle our things and rest. There we found 5 Tents. How cool right? indoor camping! We were supposed to sleep in the outdoor tents, unfortunately, it rained hard. But actually, when you are inside the tent, you’ll never know the difference. You can still hear the nature sounds. It was indeed a cool experience.
Since Alomah’s Place is located in the highlands, you would really feel the cold air getting through your clothes. YES! this kind of weather is something that I look forward to because it is super hot in Metro Manila.  A natural air-conditioner. With the said weather, I was able to sleep soundly that night. According to the owners, the temperature there can drop as low as 10 dergees celcius. Wow!
Just to warn you, since you know that the temperature is cold at Alomah’s Place, you have to endure the cold water as well hahaha! I don’t know if you can request for a hot water to put in your bathing water. But believe me, the water is freezing cold! But I survived! Just shout it out and jump! hahahaa!
Alomah's Place
Moving on. The next day, we waited for the sunrise and I was really amazed how beautiful Alomah’s Place is when the sunlight shined over the place. Look at that view behind me. Lots of green. So relaxing and peaceful. Priceless.
Alomah's Place

We then proceeded to our farm tour as scheduled. As we walk through the farm, we saw some high-value crops such as different variety of lettuce and herbs which the farm sells. The farm uses organic fertilizers to feed and nourish its crops. With that, you’ll know that what you’re eating is really healthy and not showered with chemical fertilizers that can harm your health in the long run.
Alomah's Place
The farm also has this small pond where they breed and raise organic Tilapia which they also serve to their guests by order.
 Alomah's Place
After our farm tour, we tried some activites inside the farm. Some of my fellow bloggers bravely rode a bamboo raft. Hello there Marj! You’re so brave! Did not try this one, so scared to go out of balance hahaha since there’s no side rails that you can hold on to while riding on the raft.
horseback riding in Mindanao
I mentioned earlier that owners Sir Benjohn and Ms. Grace joined and won several cowboy competitions. Yes! They do have beautiful horses which you can actually ride on.

Meet Riffle, one of Alomah’s champion horses. At first I was scared, but my love for animals is more than my fear. It is actually my first time to ride a horse and it was a very cool experience. Another check for my bucketlist.

What else to see and experience at Alomah’s Place?

Alomah's Place Mindanao

The Bamboo Playground

For the kids and kid-at-heart, this bamboo playgound can add up to the enjoyment and fun during your stay.

Alomah's Place what to do

Alomah’s Place bonfire pit

A  different kind of bonding experience, as you light up a bonfire at night which will also keep you warm from the cold weather at Dahilayan, Manolo Fortich.

Alomah's Place Seminar hall

Alomah’s Place function hall

Alomah’s Place has a function hall where you can conduct seminars, and other indoor activities.

Alomah's Place cottages accommodation

Alomah's Place

Alomah's Place

These loft-type cottages are good for 4 persons for only P2,500 a night.

Alomah's Place outdoor camping

If you are the adventurous type, you can also rent a tent for only P500.00. That’s if the weather is nice.

Alomah’s Place is really a nice venue for team building, seminars, retreats, and family outing as well. And with all the activities mentioned above, It will surely be a breather from the stress, pollution and other negative things in the metro. A place that will make you feel healthy, energized, relaxed and clean.

Alomah's Place

So there you have it. Alomah’s Place. I’m really impressed how these kind of farms evolved from a simple farm into a place which promotes eco-tourism. Imagine if conventional farmers can change their ways and convert their farms to something like Alomah. Slowly but surely income will come . Plus they get to inspire, educate and help other people through their organic farm.

For more information about Alomah’s Place and for bookings/reservations, you may visit their Facebook Page www.facebook.com/Alomahs-Place or contact them directly through their mobile number 0908-8972466 / 0917-7153560.

Cervantes Farm: New Square Foot Organic Urban Gardening

by Cristelle Torres 3 Comments
Cervantes Farm: New Square Foot Organic Urban Gardening

It’s a sad reality that because of progress, many farmlands are being converted to commercial buildings and establishments or subdivisions. With these changes, we do need to adopt so we can live normally. As Filipinos, we are resourceful and we always find ways to imrovise. Did you now that you can create your very own organic farm in your backyard?

Cervantes Farm

That’s what I learned during my latest Organic Agrigulture trip in Cagayan De Oro. Our first stop, Cervantes Farm which is located at Zone 5, Pagatpat, Cagayan de Oro City.

Cervantes Farm

It was lunchtime then when we arrived there and before our farm tour started, we all ate a very sumptous boodle lunch courtesy of Cervantes Farm. Will you look at that! Woot!

Cervantes Farm

It was a different kind of dining experience for us, eating on a banana trunk as our plate, which most commonly known as “Bani” for the locals there. Well, I mentioned earlier that Filipinos are resourceful right? 🙂

Cervantes Farm

And what a nice way to ease our thirst due to scorching heat outside was this freshly-madeBuko juice. So thirst quenching and refreshing.

Cervantes Farm

For my dessert, I ate one of these ripe mangoes. Beleive me, they may be small in size, but they are sweet!  I can consue 10 in one sitting hahhaha!

Cervantes Farm

After our lunch, the owner of Cervantes Farm, retired general,Mr. Honorio Cervantes, took our group for a tour within his small and humble farm. He introduced to us the concept of Square Foot Urban Gardening which I find very practical and very doable for starters who wanted to build his or her own organic farm at the comforts of their backyards.

Cervantes Farm Square Foot Urban Gardening

Just imagine. All you need is a square foot land and knowledge about Square Foot farming then you are good to go.

Square foot planting guide

You can use the photo above for reference. Of course you cannot just plant as many seedlings as you want. You want a healthy and bounty harvest right? You should do it the right way.

Advantages of Square Foot Farming:

  1. Requires Small space only(Square foot).
  2. Saves Water.
  3. Requires LESS effort.
  4. Earth-Friendly.

Cervantes Farm Vertical Farming

In addition to Squre foot farming, you can also improvise and do Vertical Farming to maximize the planting space and to reap more organic produce.

I’ve been to different Organic farms. Some are fully established and are already big players in the organic farming industry but I can say that Cervantes Farm is one of my favorites. I learned from this farm that you don’t need to have a huge lot in order to start your very own organic farm.

This square foot gardening concept can contribute to sustainable living in the urban setting. Plus it can be a possible source of income in the long run.

Cervantes Farm: New Square Foot Organic Urban Gardening is a learning site accredited by Agricultural Training Institute, Regional Training Center-X.

Chillin’ At The Roof deck Bar by Meranti

May 17, 2016 by Cristelle Torres No Comments
Roof deck Bar by Meranti

Looking for a place to chill out with your friends? Or take your special date somewhere really different? There’s a new place in town located strategically in the heart of Quezon City, The Roof deck Bar by Meranti.
The Roofdeck Bar by Meranti

Just recently, Roof Deck Bar by Meranti invited me together with other bloggers to experience the newly opened spot. I brought with me my fiance’, Rey Belen of Lifetylebucket.com, so we can see the place for ourselves and try what this new bar has to offer.Roof deck Bar by Meranti

Roof Deck Bar by Meranti is seated at the penthouse floor of the Meranti Hotel, one of the growing brands under the Max’s group Inc., where you can see the view of the city skyline plus the scenic view of the sunset.

Roof deck Bar by Meranti

When we entered the bar, the staff welcomed us with a big smile and assisted us to our seats. There’s also live music playing bossa, jazz and other easy-listening repertoir which are somewhat relaxing to the ear unlike other bars that the music is too loud, and when you go out it’s as if your deaf already.

Of course any night out will not be complete without the booze and food. Well, It’s always nice to chat with friends while drinking and munching on good food. So Roofdeck Bar by Meranti served us different dishes from appetizers, to main dishes, to desserts, and their cocktail drinks.

Roof deck Bar by Meranti Drinks

CARAFE COCKTAILS(P550)

You can choose among Mojito, Blue Lagoon, and Tequila Sunrise. Served with Nachos. Too bad, I’m allegic to alcohol or any kind of liquor so just took a photo of these cocktail drinks.

Roof deck Bar by Meranti

NACHOS(P250)

Tortilla chips served with homemade sauces such as Marinara, Sour Cream and Cheese Sauce.  The sour cream sauce taste some kind of different than the usual sour cream sauces that I have tasted before. It has a tinge if lemon in it.

Roof deck Bar by Meranti

FRIED CALAMARI(P350)

Lightly coated with seasoned flour and fried to perfection. Served with marinara sauce. Calamari or Calamares is always been one of the top choice for beer match and it’s nice that they included it to their menu. This dish is quite salty for me but it is well-cooked and easy to chew.

Roof deck Bar by Meranti

MOZZARELLA STICKS

Well, I don’t know the name of this appetizer( hahha sorry) but will call it Mozzarella sticks anyway. Well seasones and not overcooked. I always love mozzarella not just on pizza but also as a dish itself. The bland taste of it is so addicting.

Roof deck Bar by Meranti

SALMON CAKE(P350)

This three-layered salmon fish cake is somewhat unique for my taste it’s like i’m eating fried mashed potato with salmon in it. I love the taste of it overall. The Arugula leaves also added some flavor to every bite.

Roof deck Bar by Meranti

SALPICAO(P500)

Beef cubes perfectly sauted with garlic and worcestershire sauce. It’s is not only good to be paired with beer but also with rice! hahaha! It would be a perfect ulam as well.

Roof deck Bar by Meranti

Chicken Inasal(P320)

Marinated in a mixture of lime, pepper, vinegar and annato grilled over hot coals while basted with marinate. This one is really good, well it may be kinda pricey for the serving bbut this is one of the dishes that you might want to consider oredering when you go to Roof deck bar by Meranti. The flavor really seeps in to the meat of the chicken. The atchara is really good too.

Roof deck Bar by Meranti

OSSUBUCO(P650)

Milanese specialty of crossed-cut beef shanks braised with tomato, vegetables, white wine and broth. At first, I thought that it was a giant meatball. Actually, I think that’s the idea of it since it is on top of the pasta. The beef shanks are well marinated where you can taste its rich flavor on every bite. It blends well with the tomato-based sauce.

If I will not look at the price of this dish, this is something that I would order again in the future.

Roof deck Bar by Meranti

CHEESECAKE(250)

Cheesecake with a graham cracker crust and sour ceam topping. I love cheesecakes! This one is kind different. I can really taste the cheese in every bite. Super rich cheese taste. The sour cream gave the cheesecake a little twist of flavor as well.

Roof deck Bar by Meranti

JELLO SHOTS(P250)

A different kind of alcohol-based dessert in jelly. This one is really unique. Again, too bad I can’t taste it since I’m allergic. Well by the looks of it, it’s pretty interesting.
Roof Deck Bar by Meranti is open every two weeks(weekends) of the 15th and 30th of the month. Live music is also available during those schedule. During regular days, you can order the above meals downstais at Maple at Meranti(no live music).

Roof Deck Bar by Meranti is located at Penthouse floor of Meranti Hotel at 82 Scout Castor, Bgy. Laging Handa,Quezon City. For more information about Roof Deck Bar by Meranti, you may visit www.facebook.com/meranti.ph or visit their website http://merantihotel.com/.

Ngong Ping Village

Ngong Ping Village is one of the cultural tourist locations in Lantau Island that you might want to consider visiting when you are in Hong Kong. This 1.5-hectare village is where you can find the famous Bodhi Wishing Shrine, Ngong Ping Piazza, Big Buddha, Po Lin Monastery, Di Tan.

Ngong Ping Village

It was my first time in Hong Kong, my second out-of-the-country trip and I’m very much excited to tour around. With different destinations and attractions in Hong Kong, we DEFINITELY included Ngong Ping Village in our itenerary. Don’t forget to include in yours too 🙂

Even though I’m scared most of the time(I’m afraid of heights), I managed to keep my eyes open to appreciate the view of the city, airport and the greenery. Wow! It’s just so amazing. How I wish we can have something like this in the Philippines(the cable car ride).

As we travel our way up going to the village, we started to feel the cold air. Whoooohooo! I love it!
 Ngong Ping Village
And here’s the Ngong Ping 360 station in the village. There’s also a souvenir shop beside it. So just in case that you might want to take home some memorabilia like keychain, t-shirt, ref magnet and many more you can drop by there before you ride again going back to the city.
Ngong Ping Village

Actually, I don’t know what this is, I just took a photo of it. hahhaha!

Ngong Ping Village

Spotted a monk at Ngong Ping Village. I believe most  or all of them just walk from the foot of the mountain all the way up to the village as part of their ritual or penitention.

Bodhi Wishing Shrine. The Wishing Tree or popularly known as Bodhi Tree or Bo Tree is said to be the “Tree of Awakening”. It was where Siddhartha meditated “Who am I and why am I here?”. Under this tree, He received enlightenment and eventually became a Buddha.

Apparently, I was not able to capture the whole of it. I mean the tree. hahaha(Sorry).

Ngong Ping Village

These are actual wishes from locals and tourists. There is a legend there saying that wishes made under the Bodhi Tree will come true.

You too can write your own wish and post it at the Bodhi Wishing Shrine. How? Once you purchase any item worth HK$150 or more at Ngong Ping 360 Souvenir Shops, you can redeem your very own wishing card and post it yourself. Who knows your wish might come true. 🙂

WHAT MORE TO SEE AT NGONG PING VILLAGE?

Ngong Ping

This is the New Pai Lau ornamental archway. It was built based on the northern architectural style of the Qing dynasty (1644–1911).
Ngong Ping Village (29)Awww… Look at that dog. Don’t worry thay are friendly. But of course dogs do have mood swings as well, so be careful. 🙂
Bodhi path

This is the Ngong Ping Buddha Path. This central walkway to Di Tan, where religious ceremonies are occasionally held. If you will walk through the Buddha path, you will see on both sides statues of the Twelve Divine Generals and 40 lotus-shaped lanterns.

Bodhi path

The Twelve Divine Generals are said to be the protectors in Buddhism and each of them is responsible for guarding a  section for two hours each day. Thes 12 generals also represent the twelve Chinese zodiac signs, each indicated on their crowns.

Look! lots of sleeping dogs. How cute. They are just roaming around with the tourist. Well, the village is their home. 🙂

That’s all for now. Actually, there’s more to see, so I decided to divide my Ngong Ping Village tour into two. You might want to read my next travel post, My Ngong Ping Village Tour in Lantau Island Hong Kong (Part 2) to see the rest of my Ngong Ping tour experience like the Big Buddha, Po Lin Monastery, Di Tan, etc. . 🙂

My Ngong Ping Village Tour in Lantau Island (Part 2)

by Cristelle Torres 1 Comment
Lantau Island

Hi guys! You are now reading the part two of my Ngong Ping Village Tour in Lantau Island, Hong Kong. I mentioned this on the first part already, but I will mention it again. Just to refresh your memory 🙂

Ngong Ping Village

Ngong Ping Village is one of the cultural tourist locations located at Lantau Island in Hong Kong. This 1.5-hectare village is where you can find the famous Big Buddha, Po Lin Monastery, Ngong Ping Piazza, Di Tan, Bodhi Wishing Shrine, etc..

This time, I’m gonna show you the Di Tan, Po Lin Monastery, and the Big Buddha(Tian Tan Buddha). Are you excited?

Di Tan Ngong Ping

First is Di Tan or Earth Temple.  This is the open round space facing the Po Lin Monastery and the Big Buddha. You will never have a hard time finding the Di Tan. If you see a round area with banners and flags, that’s the Di Tan. It is also where religious ceremonies are occasionally held.

Next is the Po Lin Monastery. Po Lin means “Precious Lotus” and the lotus flower symbolizes “purity” in Buddhism.  This monastery is located at the Ngong Ping Plateau just across the Big Buddha. Dubbed as ‘the Buddhist World in the South’, Po Lin Monastery served as a home for many devoted monks. Believe me, you will not have a hard time finding this one.

Po Lin Monastery

Before you reach the main monastery temple, you have to pass through this temple gateway called Hall of Bodhisatva Skanda.

Po Lin Monastery

Po Lin Monastery

Inside the gateway hall, you will see some statues of deities and guards protecting the entrance. You will also see people giving their offerings and prayers to each of them.

Po Lin Monastery

So here’s the Po Lin Monastery’s main temple. To bad I was not able to explore it because there was an ongoing meditation/ritual of the monks. So temporarily the main temple is off limits. You can view them from the temple’s doors but you can’t take pictures/videos.

If you would notice at the back of the main temple is another palace-like temple which is larger and newer. There’s a shrine hall there called the Hall of the Ten Thousand Buddhas. It also has an exhibition hall for Budhist relics,a Scripture Library, a Meditation hall, there are also facilities there for cultural and tourist events. In the picture above, you will hardly see it since It was foggy that time and my point of view is from the front of the main temple. I’m really sad that I was not able see it. 🙁

Luckily, I was able to witness a local doing the #BuddhaBathingRitual outside the Po Lin Monastery in #NgongPingVillage. #LantauIsland #BuddhaBathingFestival #festival #HongKong #Culture #norms #heritage #buddhaism #travel #traveller #explorer #wanderer #travelgram #wanderlust #OutOfTheCountry #places #placestogo #tourist #TravellingKitty

There was an ongoing festival during that time at Po Lin Monastery. First time to ecounter this kind of festival. The Buddha Bathing Festival. Please see my Instagram video so you can see how to do it.

Ngong Ping Village (23)

According to legend, nine dragons sprayed water to bathe the baby Buddha at birth. To commemorate this, at Buddhist temples across the city, devotees gather to pay their respects to this revered deity by bathing statues of him in bowls of water. The ritual is believed to aid in the purification of one’s soul. One of the grandest ceremonies is held at the Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island, home of the Big Buddha.(Source:http://hk360guide.com)

Ngong Ping Village (24)

Bathing the Buddha is just one of the festival activities to celebrate the birthday of Buddha. It is also one of the unique and most spiritual festivals celebrated in Hong Kong.

Tian Tan Buddha

Next is the Big Buddha or Tian Tan Buddha. It is that big and high(34 metres high) that it took 12 years to complete it(year 1993). WoW!  You definitely should see this when you visit the village.  But of course, you have to climb up the 268 steps for a closer look of the bronze buddha and it’s surroundings, which I did. Well, It’s worth it!

Tian Tan Buddha

That’s me taking a selfie on my way up!. Unfortunately, It was very foggy when we visited the village so I wasn’t able to take clear photos of the Tian Tan Buddha. But being there and seeing the famous Buddha for real is already a very nice experience for me.

Ngong Ping Village Big Buddha

The Big Buddha or Tian Tan Buddha became a major cultural landmark in Hong Kong. Imagine how many tourists, buddhist and even locals go to Ngong Ping not just for vacation or to roam around but also to give their offerings and prayers.

Ngong Ping Village Big Buddha

When you reach the top platform, there are six more smaller bronze statues on their knees surrounding Tian Tan Buddha. It is called “The Offering of the Six Devas”. You would notice that they are holding something, these are actually offerings. Flowers, incense, ointment, lamp, and music.

There are also three halls underneath the Big Buddah, The Hall Of Remembrance, The Hall of Benevolent Merit, and The Hall of Universe. Too bad taking pictures are not allowed within these halls. But just want to let you know that there are these halls that you might want to consider visiting.

NOTE: Po Lin Monastery and the Big Buddha is open for public between 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Ngong Ping Parking lot

On our way back going to the Ngong Ping cable car station, Aside from the dogs, we also saw a few cows roaming around and walking freely with the tourist. We followed some and saw them chillin’ in the parking lot. Just be mindful of your steps. You don’t want to be stepping on a “gold mine” hahaha. You know what I mean. 🙂

Haaaaay… Gonna miss this place and I would definitely want to go back again and again and again… 🙂 So. If you are in Hong Kong, don’t miss out going in Lantau Island.
